Spooner Ice Arena Receives $206,071 in C-PACE Funding for Energy-Efficiency Upgrades
Investment will save over $56,000 annually
Madison, WI (December 5, 2019) In an era of shrinking budgets and growing concerns about sustainability, municipalities of all sizes are looking for affordable ways to fund energy-efficiency improvements. The Spooner Civic and Community Center recently qualified for $206,071 in affordable C-PACE financing. The funding allows the addition of rooftop solar to its local ice arena at 301 Walnut Street in Spooner, Wisconsin, and cut energy costs for decades to come.
The Spooner facility houses a hockey rink, arena and restaurant and is a popular community resource. The 71,576 square foot facility was originally constructed in 1988. The 19,788 square foot rooftop solar unit is estimated to generate roughly 464,374 kilowatt hours annually—nearly 59% of the facility’s electricity needs. Annual estimated savings over the next thirty years is $56,942, which means rapid investment payback.
“The ice arena is a popular community asset. It’s a high-visibility place for us to add a solar array,” said Justin Hansen, property owner. “We’re excited to show how we can contribute to a more sustainable community in a cost-effective way.” Economic financing was key to launching this project. “Not every lender can offer affordable financing on projects like this. The loan terms made possible by the PACE Wisconsin program made this a reality,” he continued.
Greenworks Lending is financing the PACE lending for the project. Christopher Ellis, Business Development Director, Greenworks Lending shared, “There is nothing more Wisconsin than solarizing an ice rink, there really is no better example of how PACE can work in the Wisconsin market. The solar updates will be powering the home of Spooner’s future hockey stars for years to come.”
PACE Wisconsin is a statewide program that enables commercial property owners to obtain low-cost, long-term financing for energy-efficiency, renewable energy, and water conservation improvements. “C-PACE financing has made a huge difference for municipalities across the state,” said Jason Stringer, PACE Wisconsin Program Administrator. “It allows communities of all sizes to invest in clean energy upgrades in a cost-effective way. Plus, it creates new jobs and helps the local economy—without taxpayers footing the bill. That’s an important message, especially for municipalities.”
